The 80s and 90s are two decades when the best hiphop songs in history were made. Here is a recap of the 10 best rap songs and hiphop artists in the genre. These are all tracks that have laid the foundation of hiphop, making it the music genre it is today.

10. A Tribe Called Quest – Electric Relaxation

A Tribe Called Quest is remembered as a influencing hiphop group in America during the 80s and 90s. Consisting of mc’s Q-Tip and Phife Dawg and producer Ali Shaheed Muhammed, ATCQ wrote hiphop history with hits like Jazz, Bonita Applenum, Can I Kick it, Luck of Lucien and Electric Relaxation. Q-tip later went on to pursue a successful solo career, Phife Dawg announced his worsening condition of diabetes and Ali is known for his involvement in the short lasting but celebrated music project Lucy Pearl.

9. Mobb Deep – Hell On Earth

Mobb Deep is the stone cold NY hiphop duo, fronted by Kejuan ”Havoc” Muchita och Albert ”Prodigy” Johnson. These two Queens originators made it to the national music charts with the hit Hell on Earth.

8. Dead Prez – HipHop

Tallahassee rappers M-1 and Stic.man formed the American hiphop group Dead Prez releasing their debute ablum Let’s Get Free in 2000, including unfogettable tracks Mind sex and HipHop.

7. 2Pac – Keep Ya Head Up

Hiphop fan or not, everybody knows 2Pac. Some as the rapper who got killed in a gang bang between East and West. Notorious B.I.G was another victim of the increasing violence in the American gangster rap industry during the 80s and 90s. 2Pac is sworned by many rap critics as the best rapper there was, is and will ever be. 2Pacs real name is Lesane Parish Crooks and was born June 16th 1971 in Harlem, New York. He died September 13th 1996 in Las Vegas at the age of 25. Keep Ya Head Up is one of many timeless hits by 2Pac Shakur.

6. Jurassic 5 – Quality Control

The hiphop collective Jurassic 5 consists of four mc’s ( Chali 2na, Akil, Mark 7even, Zaakir aka Soup) and two dj’s (Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark). Based out of LA, J5 started in 1993 with the debute album Jurassic 5 LP in 1997 and follow up album Quality Control in 2000.

5. Talib Kweli & Dj Hi-Tek – Good Mourning

Solo artist Talib Kweli and dj Hi-Tek joined forces in 2000 releasing album Reflection Eternal with the last track Good Mourning.

4. The Roots – What They Do

Rap legends The Roots with true icons Black Thought (mc) and ?uestlove (drums) came out of Philly back in 1989 with the first album Organix in 1993, From the Ground Up in 1994, Do You Want More?!!!??! in 1995, Illadelph Halflife in 1996, Things fall Apart in 1999 and the rest is history.  What they Do is a powerful track portaiying the hypocritical and transparent life of famous hiphop artists.

3. KRS One – Sound of Da Police

KRS-One is Lawrence Krisna Parker, born in August 20th, 1965 in Brooklyn, New York. A true founder of hiphop and creator of a sounds like no other. Sound of Da Police is a clear given for this toplist.

2. Pharcyde – Running

This LA, South Central group started out in 1991, quickly making their name as an upcoming alternative hiphop group with tracks like Ya Mama, Passing me by and Running. Pharcyde originally consisted of these four members: Imani (Emandu Wilcox), Slimkid3 (Tre Hardson), Bootie Brown (Romye Robinson) and Fatlip (Derrick Stewart).

    i agree somewhat but ur missing a couple of songs that deserves to be placed in there one is a remix by eminem called *One Day At A Time* with eminem tupac and the outlawz even if u don’t like rap or eminem or even tupac just sit down and listen to it the beat is so easy to move too 10/10 the lyrics actually mean something 10/10
    and the rhymes or masterd 10/10

    seriously just listen to it then you will know what i mean……

    Great list. That Tupac joint is touching and timeless. Obviously there are more than 10 songs that could be considered “the best” but solid list overall.
