Top 10 Hotels Featured in Popular Films

There has always been something very exciting about staying in a hotel – usually you are travelling, which has its own perks but the hotel has its own appeal as well. You can order room service, walk down the hall to the pool, and enjoy the luxurious atmosphere and upscale service. One reason we love hotels so much is because we feel it is glamorous, partly in gratitude to all the movies that take place in hotels. The following are ten popular films that have taken place in hotels that are still known to this day.
 

1. Psycho – The Bates Motel

One of Alfred Hitcock’s most noted films, Psycho (1960) is to this day considered one of the scariest films ever made. The Bates Motel is owned by momma’s boy and ruthless killer, Norman Bates. In the film he lures his young, beautiful guest to is office for dinner and then brutally murders her in her shower at the motel.

2. Pretty Woman – The Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel

A large portion of America’s favorite romantic comedy took place in The Regent Beverly Wilshire. Lady of the night, Vivian and the handsome business man, Edward, fall in love in the luxurious hotel’s pent house.

3. Hotel Rwanda – Hotel des Mille Collines

In the ousttanding drama, hotel owner, played by Don Cheadle attempts to use his hotel to rescue the country’s citizens from genocide. The film is based on real life events that took place in Rwanda in 1994.

4. The Shining – Timberline Lodge – “The Overlook Hotel”

Writer and recovering alcoholic, Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), takes a job as a caretaker at the Overlook Hotel during the winter off-season and brings his wife and son. Based on the novel by Stephen King, the hotel’s tragic past is haunting Jack and driving him mad.

5. Lost In Translation – Park Hyatt Tokyo Hotel

Sofia Coppola’s second feature film takes place in the dim Tokyo hotel that goes along with the humorous drama that is Bob Harris’ life, and the corresponds with his strange relationship with college graduate, Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson).

6. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer – El Tecuan Marina Resort Costalegre

The teen scream of the 90s appeared to take place in the Bahamas, but it in fact was a resort in Mexico. The group of friends are unable to get off the island that is just them and the killer who has been after previous survivors of his vengeful wrath, Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.).

7. French Kiss – Hotel George V, Paris

A somewhat lost favorite tells the story of American sweetheart (Meg Ryan) chasing her fiance to Paris after he leaves her for a stunning French woman. Multiple adventures take place in the perfect Parisian hotel and helps the love story between Ryan and quirky winemaker, Luc (Kevin Kline).

8. Home Alone 2: Lost In New York – The Plaza Hotel, New York

The popular hotel and a favorite of Louisville hotels, has been featured as a backdrop in multiple films, such as: Funny Girl, Arthur, The Scent of a Woman, and many others. The hotel was the location of many fun scenes for Home Alone 2, with Macaulay Culkin. The most memorable would probably be when Kevin, who got on the wrong plane during the family vacation and ended up alone in New York, slides through the hotel lobby into an elevator. The movie also features hotel owner at the time, Donald Trump.

9. 1408 – The Roosevelt Hotel, New York – “The Dolphin Hotel”

Stephen King does it again with this brilliant horror film starring John Cusack. The hotel featured in the film is actually The Roosevelt, but is called the Dolphine. The hotel is home to the evil suite, 1408, where every guest has died a horrible, unusual death.

10. Forgetting Sarah Marshall – Turtle Bay Resort

Most of the fan favorite, romantic comedy was filmed in Hawaii at the Turtle Bay Resort. This was the location where heartbroken Peter goes to get over his ex, Sarah Marshall, until he realizes that she too is staying at the resort with her new, rockstar boyfriend.
