With Lucky Strike and Marlboro as exceptions (episode 1-3, season 1, Mad Men) , the advertising industry has always struggled to brand and market cigarettes. Looking at vintage ads for Newport, Camel or Chesterfield they all say the same thing – switch to us, our ciggs taste better. Let’s start with an oldie. The classic campaign against Marlboro’s “Welcome to Marlboro Country, was one of the first anti-smoking ad campaigns to get wide-spread attention.
