10. The Year  2012 – The End of The Mayan Calender

The year 2012 is the last year in the 5,125 year cycle of the Mayan Calender. December 21st is thus believed by many odd people to be the last day of human civilization. All glory to the Indian history and heritage, but can  it possible be that they Mayan dude who made the calender got bored or had better things to do? Not proven faulty yet, we will just have to wait and see if this prophecy will come true.

Besides the Millennium bug, the end of the world was highly anticipated. None of the two came true, and all that the world was left with was yet another lame new years eve.

8.The Year 1997 – Heaven’s Gate Mass Suicide

In brand new Nike shoes, 39 cultists committed mass suicide under the belief that the Apocalypse was here. At least they went out in style.

7. The Year 1982 – The Jupiter Effect

The bestselling book of 1974, The Jupiter Effect, by John Gribbin and Stephen Plagemann predicted that a rare planetary alignment were to cause massive quakes. The tide elevated by 0,04mm.

6. The Year 1914 – Jehova’s Witnesses

Jehovas Witnesses predict Armageddon in 1925 and 1975, which of course pass uneventfully.

5. The Year of 1910 – Halley’s Comet

The return of Halley’s Comet in 1910 inspires the theory that its tail gases will turn earth into a toxic dust cloud. Mark Twain dies instead.

4. The Year 1844 – Millerites await Second Coming

Baptist preacher William Miller formed the American Christian sect, the Millerite movement, not long before prophesying the return of Jesus.  The some 50,000 Millerites across the U.S preparing for Second Coming on October 22 were left disappointed. This date is today known as The Great Disapointment.

3.The Year 1533 – The Son of God Returns

For a more precise prophecy, Anabaptist leader, Melchior Hoffman predicted the return of Jesus to Strasbourg, Germany of all places. Local prosecutors did not however believe the poor schmuck, who was sent to prison where he died in 1543.

The unpopularity of Islam is one thing, but pinning the end of the world to it is another. Pope Innocent III was however not late in predicting that the Apocalypse would come exactly 666 years after the birth of Islam.

Turn of millenniums has a special effect on people, and especially Christians who expected the Messiah’s attendance on his 1000’s birthday. He doesn’t show up.
