Top 10: Wackiest Guinness World Records Broken this Decade (00s)

Sponsored list by You

When the owner of Guinness wanted to settle an argument and had nowhere to turn for a reference, the Guinness Book of Records was created. People for over 60 years now have been doing some odd (and gross) things to get into this world renowned iconic book. People have been breaking records for as long as most of us can remember.

We still haven’t outgrown the need to be famous, not even in the noughties. And we’re going for the world record for most Top 10 lists on a website, here are ten more:

(Please note: These should not be tried at home, more world records at guinnessworldrecords.com.)

#1. Largest Gathering of People in Gorilla Gear (2005)

24906_ptetb_1246418736The largest gathering of people dressed as gorillas involved 637 participants of the Great Gorilla Fun Run to raise money for The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in London, UK on September 25, 2005.

All of this proving; the people of London have a huge heart and go bananas for charity.

#2. Longest Backwards Motorcycle Ride (2006)

The record for the longest backwards motorcycle ride is 150 km (93.21 miles) and was achieved by Hou Xiaobin (China) in Binzhou City, China, on October 4, 2006. The interesting thing to note is that he was going backwards, how many bikes have a reverse?

#3. Most to Parachute from a Balloon Simultaneously (2003)

baloon-parachuting
In an attempt to see who the first to get to lunch was, a total of 20 members from the Paraclub Flevo of Lelystad, The Netherlands, jumped from a balloon simultaneously at 2,000 m (6,500 ft) over Markelo, The Netherlands, on May 10, 2003.

#4. World’s Loudest Burp (2008)

paulhunnThis record truly turns the stomach. The record for the loudest burp is 107.1 dB achieved by Paul Hunn (UK) in London, UK, on 24 September 2008. Paul is a regular on the Turkish diner party circuit now as his great appreciation for the cuisine can be heard by all.

Check out Paul Hunn in action here.

#5. Longest Ear Hair (2007)

victorAs of August 2007 Anthony Victor (India) had hair sprouting from the centre of his outer ears that measured 18.1 cm (7.12 in) at its longest point.

This is a record most grandpas have a shot at beating though and it is to be expected that there are scored of people gunning for Anthony’s record in bingo halls around the world.

#6. Most books Typed Backwards (2002)

santeliamicheleMichele Santelia (Italy) typed backwards 67 books in their original languages including The Odyssey, Macbeth, The Vulgate Bible, the Guinness World Records Book 2002, and the Dead Sea scrolls in Ancient Hebrew.

Michele put together a 4.26 m (14 ft) high tower of the books typed. He completed typing backwards Etruscan scripts in Etruscan Language and The Million in Ancient Chinese on 16 November 2008. I could barely type this list forwards.

#7. Largest Motorcycle Pyramid (2001)

DareThe Dare Devils Team of the Indian Army Signal Corps achieved a motorcycle pyramid consisting of 201 men balanced on 10 motorcycles, on July 5, 2001 at Gowri Shankar Parade Ground, Jabalpur, India.

Without the use of training wheels, the pyramid travelled a distance of 129 m (424 ft).

#8. Largest Collection of Bar Towels (2005)

bartowelsThe largest collection of bar towels belongs to Robert Begley of Chambersburg, United States, with 2,372 towels representing 27 different countries; which he has been collecting since 1990.

#9. Longest Wedding Dress Train (2009)

Long Wedding Dress

The longest wedding dress train measured 1579 m (5180 ft 5 in) and was unveiled during the E-Mariage festival in Bucharest, Romania, on 1 April 2009.

What is not mentioned is that that day, 26 other soon to be brides ordered long trains for their dresses that afternoon. Guinness will be busy in the coming June.

#10. Oldest Original Pair of Levi’s Ever Sold (2005)

Levis-501-Vintage

An original pair of Levi Strauss & Co (USA) 501 jeans aged over 115 years old was sold by Randy Knight (USA) to an anonymous collector (Japan) for $60,000 (£33,230) through internet auction site eBay on June 15, 2005. Unfortunately, there is currently no Ebay market for used socks, nor record for longest period of time spent in a single pair…. Yet.

  1. This is a fun book, there are too many wacky records to really create a “top ten”!

I’ve been using it for the “GWR series” on my stream. (A kind of break between the bachelor pad music & jazz music) if you want more GWR records, here are a couple samples (in audio format)

(You covered the loudest male burp, the loudest female burp was 104 db.)

    Fun stuff!
