Because of its very nature, a top list of fashion, of any decade, is tough but we figured one out anyway.

Fashion is one of those highly subjective industries where no one is really sure who’s going to be at the top and who’s on their way down to the bottom. At any given moment, everything is completely subject to change. Because of its very nature, a top list of the decade, any decade, is a tough one… but we figured one out anyway. Here are your top ten Fashion Designers of the 2000s.

10. Marc Jacobs

Is one of those designers who makes everyone who wears his clothing feel like they are on the cutting edge of fashion. His collections are innovative with a nod to classic cut and wear.

Guess who?

9. Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana

Everyone who is anyone most likely owns a few of their pieces. This Italian duo is known for making women everywhere in fashion feel like they are wearing the best. Confidence and sexiness leap right of the shoulder with these two.

8. John Galliano

Currently Chief Designer at Givenchy. Within a year of graduating art school though, this fashion phenomenon was wowing the fashion world with his expressive style.

7. Stella McCartney

While being the daughter of Paul McCartney most likely has its perks, Stella has managed to make place for herself in the fashion world all on her own. She is classy and cutting edge.

6. Ralph Lauren

One of the most recognizable names in the world. With branded scents like Polo and Polo Sport and a complete clothing line to his name, Lauren has given the world a higher sense of fashion at an affordable, everyone cost.

5. Betsey Johnson

Betsey’s designs are bright and vibrant with a little playful side to them. Johnson’s styles are not just fanciful, but also very wearable making her one of the most versatile designers on this list.

4. Alexander McQueen

Raw excellence at its best. Through use of color and placement, McQueen is able to do with fashion what impressionist art does with the art fan. His blatantly unrefined style has been en vogue for a while now and while his wild side has not been harnessed yet, at least it is working for the side of good.

3. Donatella Versace

A name that is familiar to even non-fashion buffs. Her style has never been replicated, but then again she is a Versace herself. Elegance, slim lines and well placed curves assures the continued success of the Versace legacy.

2. Tom Ford

Though not as well known as Versace or Lauren, Ford is nevertheless an icon in this generation having won at the VH1 fashion awards and being named fashion designer of the year once already. He is a favorite on the red carpet and looks to be on the scene for a long time.

1. Valentino Garavani

An Italian born designer who might well have been born of Greek and of Athena for the way he seems to worship the human form. His creations scream femininity while at the same time seems somehow reserved. He has struck a balance between sexy, sleek and radical. Designer to the stars true, from the stars? Perhaps.

Reality has become something of a subjective concept in the world today.

Reality has become something of a subjective concept in the world today. Many of us spend hours online or on the couch watching life go by. However, in early modern times television came up with something to make us feel like we have a life: shows about other people’s lives. And we bought it. So here are your Top 10 Reality Shows of the 2000s:

10. Survivor

Do we really need to write a synopsis for this one? On the off chance you’ve not been on planet Earth in the last decade here it goes. A group of strangers are placed in a remote area and have to survive on what they can scrounge up on their own. As an added challenge, there are contests with another group of strangers who are going through the same thing. And people are voted off the island. This is considered great fun for the rest of us, because we have beer in the fridge and can laugh at the starving people trying to win a million dollars.

Survivor Best Moments & Highlights

9. The Bachelor

This is another type of Survivor. Women line up and try to impress a guy who could be anyone really, but for the sake of the show is a successful princely entrepreneur with pearly white teeth and a cleft chin. The women of course are out to win one on one time with our bachelor and steal him away. The seasons come and go and someone’s always won, but interesting enough, no one’s ever actually gotten married. The premise spawned a lot of copycat programming though such as number 8…..

8. Flavor of Love

It’s insane, and I don’t particularly understand it, but this show threw out some serious numbers. 4.9 million tuned in. It’s mind boggling, but like a train wreck a lot of people couldn’t stop watching it. But still, I suppose with the amount of child support Flav has to pay, he had to do something.

Best Girl Fights in Flavor of Love

7. The Apprentice

There are those who say that it’s a jungle in the work place. It’s tougher than that when you’re trying to get a job with Donald Trump. The man’s image of being a really nice guy and regular fella was irreparably damaged with the first “Your Fired” and never will come back. Yet somehow people like him better now.

Best Omarosa Fights of The Apprentice

6. America’s Next Top Model

Silly, self-indulgent and shallow; this is reality competition at its best! Model wannabes compete in a competition to be AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL. The only problem is none of the winners have really done anything afterwards. Still, this is inspirational to all of us because “like, they’re soooo pretty and like, you know, making the world better with their prettiness.”

Funniest moments of ANTM

5. Extreme Makeover

Extreme Makeover gave even ugly people a chance at shallowness, but somehow didn’t catch on as well as America’s Next Top Model. But it gets points for being daring and for the spinoff not mentioned in this list; Extreme Home Makeover, which is slowly becoming an American icon.

4. The Biggest Loser

People share with us the sad stories of how they got too fat, and we, the public buy it and send them tons of mail, and tune in every week to see how much weight they’ve lost. The irony is in 11 million people tuning in every week and seeing who has lost weight… while eating snack food. If we were really going to support them, we’d be doing reps with them down at the gym.

Biggest Loser Best Moments

3. The Amazing Race

This is a $1 million grand prize for the team that arrives before all the rest in the final leg of long journey around the world. Since the teams of two consist of people who entered the competition together and already have a functional (or sometimes dysfunctional) relationship, there’s little chance for the cattiness and backstabbing but then again, if someone doesn’t turn left when they’re supposed to.

The Amazing Race Winners

2. The Hills

Lauren Conrad graduated high school and took to the Hollywood Hills to gain more teenage girl ratings and because she couldn’t yet turn loose of her fans from the real OC. This is a prettier show than most of the reality TV out there, and no, not because of the girls. It this case, it’s more like in spite of the girls.

The Hills Season 1-4 Best Moments

1. Jon & Kate Plus 8

The kids were cute, the stories seemed a little staged, but overall the reality series itself wasn’t that bad. It’s the reality behind the reality that makes this one so interesting. After the show ends, it’s the divorce and law suits and “those poor children” that’s kept us wondering “whatever happened…?”

Check out the best moments here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieeSmk4Ex28

And as an added bonus…
Our own take on a reality show storyline

Two teams of four guys and four girls have to give each other makeovers in the Hollywood Hills while racing from Mulholland to Rodeo Drive. The first girl and first guy that arrive have to decide which of their teammates must marry an overweight person. The remaining six contestants will then have a knife fight, the winner of which will appear on America’s Next Top Convict, which will explore the country’s penal system on a day to day basis. Your host? Hulk Hogan of course!

What has the 2000s brought human kind in science and technology? Other than Berlusconi of course.

Soon we are looking at advances that will make even our jaded heads spin. For now though, let’s look at how far we’ve come in the last 10 years with, the Top 10 Scientific Breakthroughs of the Noughties.

10. Evolution Theory Further Supported

Scientist site that there is only a 4% genetic difference between humans and apes- this is far closer than was previously thought. This comes, dubiously, on the heels of the completion of the human genome project, which set out to map all human traits. In addition to the chimp data, 2005 saw scientist using the flu virus as another example of evolution. It really does seem like they are beating a long dead horse though.

9. Nonelectronics Research

The idea of using chemical groups on a molecular basis as computer is not a new one. In fact the idea has been around since the 1960s for sure. But until 2001 no one has made a serious go of it. In 2001 scientist were able to “wire” these molecules together, in effect making a nan-computer. At this point, it’s not practical to use, however, it paves the way for future, smaller computers.

8. Water on Mars

In 2004 Spirit and Opportunity, the two NASA rovers still surveying Mars, discovered that the planet once had lakes, rivers and even rain. Since water is believed to be one of the main components to establishing life, this is a major find. This has led science to wonder where all the water went and if indeed, life might have existed at one point in Mars’ history.

7. Chimpanzees Make Spears for Hunting

Two anthropologists watched as several female chimpanzees crafted spears and used them to hunt smaller mammals. Jill Pruetz of Iowa State University and Paco Bertolani of Cambridge observed them crafting the spears from beginning to end of the process with the chimpanzees going so far as to even sharpen their spears on rocks. This shows a level of sophisticated thinking not shown by any other animals in the animal kingdom ever before.

6. Engineers Create “Glass” as Strong as Steel

Engineering researchers at the University of Michigan have created a super-strong see through material. Nicholas Kotov developed a system of using a material made up of very strong and nearly microscopic clay particles. These are then placed between two layers of plastic, the tiny bits of dirt act as a reinforcement, much like millions of tiny columns- giving the ordinary material extraordinary strength. The applications for this are astounding, but most likely will be used by the military first.

5. The T-Rex Journey

A Tyrannosaurus Rex’s leg was found in Montana in 2004. What’s so amazing is that the leg was buried under a mineral sediment that preserved it for 68-million years. Scientists analyzed the biological material contained in that leg for the first time in 2007. In an issue of Science, scientists compared the deadly predator to animals that roam the earth today and concluded that it has a lot in common with chickens. This leads one to wonder if the testing was a taste test.

4. Enzymes Convert Any Blood Type to O

Shortages in type O have always been a problem due to its rarity. Type O is the type of blood that anyone can use. Blood type is important when you consider giving the wrong type of blood to someone can result in death. Researcher Henrik Clausen published research in Nature describing a way to convert any kind of blood into Type O. Should this pan out, blood reserves might swell to an unprecedented useful amount, though most likely there will always be a shortage.

3. Pulsar pair

The first known pair of pulsars was discovered in 2003. Pulsars are neutron stars that emit an incredible amount of radiation. Studying of these pulsar pairs may provide a more accurate assessment of Einstein’s theory of relativity. Until now scientists have not been able to prove or disprove Einstein’s theory.

2. Researchers Turn Skin Cells to Stem Cells

Scientists found a way to make stem cells by using a virus to change skin cells.

Japanese and American scientists were able to manipulate a skin cell into forming muscle, heart, fat and nerve tissues without using any embryonic stem cells. Unfortunately, the modified cells often became tumors.

Scientists are still fine-tuning this discovery, but the implications for stem cell research are profound.

1. New Cancer Drugs

Researchers in Massachusetts found compounds which kill cancer stem cells 100 times more efficient than chemotherapy. This would mean a more productive treatment without the side effects that chemotherapy often has. The scientists have analyzed 16,000 compounds before this one, named salinomycin, was discovered. Further trials are needed, but the research looks very promising.

While personal meltdowns normally are considered private matter, it is a prerogative most celebrities do not have.

Major parts of their lives, professional and private, being recorded, celebrities run a high risk of also having their breakdowns broadcasted. Thanks to the Internet, we are now happy to present the top ten most memorable celebrity meltdowns of the 2000s.

#10. Tom Cruise Meltdown on Oprah (2005)

Appearing on Oprah is a big deal. Winfrey turns away guests that most shows have to corral in like ponies. Cruise not only gets invited to the Oprah Show, but goes nuts while there. He was seen bowing to Oprah several times over and jumping on the couch while the women in the audience squealed in delight.

#9. The Video of Drunk and Hungry David Hasselhoff (2007)

Mein Got David! The need for a talking car that drives its self was never really more imperative than in the case of the former Knight Rider star. After several hospitalizations for alcohol poisoning and rehab attempts and drunken eating binges, fans of “the Hoff” were stunned. Most incidents involving Hasselhoff had been carefully spun and downplayed but a video released on YouTube filmed by his daughter, changed all that. The best selling German recording artist has, by all appearances jumped on the wagon and we wish him all the best in his recovery.

It was one of those surreal moments that everyone wishes they had back. Why was Tom so “amped”? He was in love with Katie Holmes, a genuine “fool for love.” I have been in love and felt that surge of energy that comes with feeling as if your heart would burst out of your chest. Would I jump on a couch and physically attack Oprah in the name of love? Maybe, it’s a tough question.

#8. Young Buck- Vibe Awards Fight (2004)

After being refused an autograph by Dr. Dre, Jimmie Johnson sucker punches Dre in the back of the head and tries to get away. A fight ensues in which Young Buck stabs Johnson in the chest. This all led to several court hearings in which Young Buck was then official considered “hard”. Several officers were involved in the incident, and strangely enough, none were charged with excessive violence.

#7. Kanye West Meltdown at the MTV EMA’s (2007)

What is with this guy and stage crashing? This is what started a lot of the behavior that led to the Kayne/ Swift controversy in 2009. At the after party Kayne was made to feel like he had somehow done a good thing. It’s hilarious when you put it into context; it’s not so much that Kayne did a good thing as that even in 2007 no one had very high expectations of him or for his behavior.

#6. Mariah Carey TRL Meltdown (2001)

With no regard to her personal safety or the program format, Mariah Carey bursts onto the stage of TRL wearing only a Loverboy T-shirt. Carey then waved to some people and droped off some ice cream. Usually people go on TV for a reason, and just being Mariah wasn’t considered reason enough and was kind of freaky. This meltdown made people at home squirm because we were all waiting for her to actually DO something, even Carson Daily. Had she gone into a soulful rendition of “Turn Me Loose”, people would have accepted that, but to drop off ice cream and go on about her own mental health?

#5. Winona Ryder’s Shoplifting Incident (2001)

After gathering up nearly $6,000 of clothing, actress Winona Ryder attempts to simply stroll out of the store she. This confused a lot of people because she could obviously afford the things she attempted to steal. And the heist being as thrilling as a walk through the mall, excitement wasn’t a factor. Suggested tips for Winona’s next attempt: Take what you want in several trips instead of one. Don’t be a movie star; people tend to give you a little more attention. “Grab and Go” only works if you can run. Saying “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice!” will not get you out of it.

#4. Tyra Banks Meltdown on America’s Next Top Model

Tyra Banks; Tough love advocate for the noughties. It was obvious that Tyra lost her objectivity with this young lady who did not seem to appreciate the opportunity given. It’s really too bad that Tyra couldn’t have been on hand to straighten Kanye out.

#3. Michael “Kramer” Richards Gone Wild during Comedy Act (2006)

While doing a comedy show in 2006 Richards felt he was being heckled by a group of African Americans. The scene degenerated into a name calling contest in which each contestant was only allowed to use one name a piece. You’ll notice in the video that people begin streaming out and it’s obvious that Richards is trying to salvage his act and find anything funny in racism, but fails miserably. This was the final nail in the coffin of Richards’ career. His tickets to the BET Awards were not honored that year.

#2. Christian Bale Rant (2009)

During the shooting a scene for his new movie “Terminator Salvation”, Bail decides to blast a lighting guy who accidentally walked into the scene in the background. The ensuing tirade leaves one breathless and like a train wreck (in audio), we can’t stop listening. You feel sorry for the guy (Shane Hurlbut) because Bail, like the preppy pit bull he often portrays, will just not let go. Bail threatened to walk off the set, to physically harm Hurlbut and everything short of reprogramming Hurlbut’s DRV if he didn’t stand still. Luckily Hurlbut was not Bale’s mother; otherwise he might have actually been physically assaulted. Of course an apology was issued later, they always are.

#1. Kanye West Second Stage Crashing (2009)

Poor Taylor Swift. While accepting the Best Female Video award at the 2009 Video Music Awards Taylor’s speech was crashed by Kanye West who exclaimed, “Beyonce had the best video of all time!”. Obviously Taylor was mortified and if she hadn’t have been so shocked, probably could have taken Kanye out in a one on one fight. Later that night Swift was able to retake the stage and give a proper acceptance speech. Now we know why rappers carry firearms; to keep Kanye West from interrupting them! There now exist several memes of this moment all over the web, check out our listing of Kanye West memes.

There have been some spectacular goals in during the decade of 2000, here are our top ten best goals 2000-2009.

Soccer is a game of anticipation. When a goal is scored it is like a lightening of adrenaline coursing up and down our spines. There have been some spectacular goals in during the decade of 2000, and with that in mind we present you with The Best Soccer Goals of the Decade!

#10. Paul Scholes, MANCHESTER UNITED vs. Bradford, 25 March 2000

Cleanly connecting with a football as it comes across the body is immensely difficult, yet Scholes manages it with ease after a David Beckham’s corner kick finds him lurking on the edge of the penalty area. The result is an incredible, textbook goal that left Badford wondering how you can defend artistry like this?

#9. Lionel Messi, BARCELONA vs. Getafe, 18 April 2007

Lionel Messi has shown incredible ball control and imaginative promise since his debut in 2004. Messi did nothing to dispel this evaluation with this goal against Getafe in 2007. Messi was still a teenager and this has left many to wonder just how much better he is going to get.

#8. Edinaldo Batista Grafite, WOLFSBURG vs. Bayern Munich, 5 April 2009

It seems like every man in the Bayern defense get’s a shot at stopping Grafite from scoring but no one manages to. To add injury to insult he scores on a nonchalant little heal kick that more or less flicked the nose of the opponents.

#7. Ronaldinho, BARCELONA vs. Chelsea, 8 March 2005

With virtually no leverage and a turn around one-timer Ronaldinho’s goal speaks volumes in that it was 99% placement that got him this goal. Though the fact he was 20 yards out does speak to the leg power of this phenomenal player.

#6. Rivaldo, BARCELONA vs. Valencia, 17 June 2001

In a tie game that suited Valencia just fine, the clock was ticking down. But with less than a minute to play Frank de Boer find Rivaldo to be a nice target for a chip pass. Rivaldo stops the ball with his chest and bicycle kicks it for a goal from 18 feet out. The goal was less than 6 inches inside of the left upright, leaving many to shake their heads in amazement.

#5. Dennis Bergkamp, ARSENAL vs. Newcastle United, 3 March 2002

Bergkamp remains one of the most skilled players in the game. There could be a Top 10 list specifically for his goals alone! However his goal against Newcastle United in 2002 says it all. The unbelievable flick that helps Bergkamp evade a bewildered Nikos Dabizas is strikingly inventive. Bergkamp’s artistry defies visual intelligence and if we could figure out how he does what he does, then we could live vicariously through him. As it is all we, and the defense can do, is just watch.

#4. Andrés Vasquez, GOTHENBURG vs. Orebro, 7 May 2007

Whether intentional or not (the debate raged) this behind the legs flick was not something the defense was looking for. The fact is, unless you watch this goal a few times for yourself, you might not even notice how Vasquez made the goal for yourself. To prove it was no mere fluke though, Vasquez did it twice more in the next game. No one loves a show off, unless it’s in soccer.

#3. Esteban Cambiasso, ARGENTINA vs. Serbia, 16 June 2006

Amatuer league coaches preach “pass, pass, pass.” Apparently Cambiasso’s team mates listened well when they were younger. It was the pass(es) that set up this slightly wobbly goal. But a goal in World Cup competition is still a goal, and always something special. Especially if it’s a team goal like this one.

#2. Cristiano Ronaldo, MANCHESTER UNITED vs. Porto, 15 April 2009

Receiving the ball deep in the Porto half, there seems to be little threat to the home side. Unless Ronaldo is on the other side. Ronaldo, put the ball on a frozen rope right past the goal keeper. The speed of the ball was timed at 64mph, and Ronaldo later called it the “greatest goal I have ever scored.” Considering his credentials, that’s saying something.

#1. Zinedine Zidane, REAL MADRID vs. Bayer Leverkusen, 15 May 2002

Technically, the game its self was astounding with both clubs playing on par for the importance of the match. The high crossing pass from Roberto Carlos was one of those breathtakers that is so high cricks form in the spectator’s necks. Zidane was anything but cramped as he winds up in the oddest position and fires the call into the net like a cannon.

We marvel at everything that happens on the silver screen, but seldom ponder that we’re experiencing what someone else wants us to experience. One single person is directing our thoughts and even emotions in a way that will drive the story forward and make it an integral part of us. That’s what a good movie director will do. A great film director will never let go of us, even after we’ve left the theater. So here are your Top Ten Directors of the Decade.

#10. Terrence Malick

Some might be asking how Malick would make any list, but the facts on this are simple: brilliance and anticipation. True, Terrence Malick is not a prolific director, but the films he does direct are visceral, colorful and most of all, memorable. Plus, the coming 2010 fantasy The Tree of Life (Brad Pitts’ thoughts) has got us on pins and needles.

The New World (2005)

The Thin Red Line (1998)

Days of Heaven (1978)

Badlands (1973)

Lanton Mills (1969)

#9. David Cronenberg

Cronenberg is known for his unique directing style and use of shock in ways no one has ever even thought of before (The Fly 1986, Crash 1996). Few directors have ever delivered the high impact and social commentary that he has and yet maintained a sense of thoughtfulness.

Spider (2002)

Camera (2000)

#8. Hayao Miyazaki

Sometimes national big numbers do not always translate into international ones. Animator Hayoa Miyazaki is an example of this. Having broken box-office records in Japan for years he has only recently been acknowledged by his peers and movie fans on the international level. His films are often insightful and thought provoking, if a little on the visually pleasant side.

Mei and the Kitten Bus (2002)

Spirited Away (2002)

#7. Errol Morris

This creator of documentaries is known for his quick mind, his ability to sniff out a story and his willingness to bring it to the screen in a manner that compels the audience to listen to his message. He does all of this in a way that is so ironic, you have to laugh, no matter how dark the subject is.

The Fog of War (2003)

#6. Abbas Kiarostami

Innovative, full of political intrigue and dangerous. Those are just three words to describe our #6 pick. Based mostly in Iran his films are shot as simply as possible and sometimes with just one camera, but the stories he tells are a political commentary laden with experimentation.

Tickets (2005)

10 on Ten (2004)

Five Dedicated to Ozu (2003)

Ten (2002)

ABC Africa (2001)

#5. Steven Soderbergh

Steven Soderbergh is one of the darlings of Hollywood, or is he? Soderbergh has had some commercial hits with Julia Roberts as a star and co-star, but seems to do these projects so he might persue his own thing on the side. This policy of quid pro quo has seemed to serve him well.

Full Frontal (2002)

Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

Traffic (2000)

Erin Brockovich (2000)

#4. Joel and Ethan Coen

Intolerable Cruelty was no Fargo, though it still had some of the edge that made the ladder such a hit to movie goers. Commercial success seemed like it was destined to change these two, but thus far they have fundamentally stayed the same, only with a bigger budget.

The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001)

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

#3. Martin Scorsese

Very few directors’ names are as recognizable as Martin Scorsese’s. He has been a legend and will continue to be so. His from the hip, take no prisoners approach to film making has been imitated, but never fully duplicated.

The Key to Reserva (2007)

The Departed (2006)

No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005)

The Aviator (2004)

Gangs of New York (2002)

#2. David Lynch

This is one of the deepest, psychologically speaking, directors around. Lynch seems to have an open window into the general psyche of all of us. Through vivid imagery and subject matter that resonates with all audiences, Lynch gets into our heads and shows us what we never knew was in there.

DumbLand (2002)

Rabbits (2002)

Mulholland Dr. (2001)

#1. Michael Haneke

The German-born Austrian Haneke was a German TV staple for many years before gaining acclaim on the silver screen. Haneke’s approach is interesting in that there is implied violence coupled with the visual give him an edge few directors can boast. His storytelling and vision are often disturbing and thought driven. In this way he invites the audience in to his creations.
