The Piglet Squid

The Piglet Squid (Helicocranchia) is perhaps not as weird looking as entirely adorable. This odd creature was first discovered of the coast of Nigeria and lives in deep ocean the world over. It is about the size of an orange and uses its small rastafari-like fins to swim around.

Narwhal

With the long tusk that extends from their heads, these whales look like unicorns of the sea. Although it would be awesome if they used their tusks to impale others when hunting and fighting, they are actually used to attract females and for other social activities.

The Hatchetfish

The discoverer who first stumbled across this deep sea fish should have rightfully called it The Fish of Death with it dead eyes and chilling stare. It also comes equipped with a light-producing photophores to scare off enemies and guard the depth of Hell, also nowadays known as the Gulf of Mexico!

Dumbo Octopus

Little is known about the dumbo octopus, which was named after the Disney cartoon for looking like an elephant without a trunk or tusks. They live 3000 to 4000 meters below the surface and use their ear-like fins to swim.

Blobfish

This sad looking fish lives 800 meters under the sea off the coasts of Australia and Tasmania. Their blob-like appearance is due to the fact that they have no muscles and are made up of a gelatinous substance. Just like humans that look like blobs and have very little muscle, these fish are rather lazy and usually just stay in one place and wait for their next meal to come by.

Axolotl

Although these Mexican salamanders look pretty happy, they are actually nearly extinct. And while they have the ability to regenerate most of their body parts, that didn’t help much when one of the only two lakes they are native to, Lake Chalco, was drained by humans. The low population of Axolotl is also threatened by non-native fish that prey on the axolotl’s young.

Yeti Crab

The Kiwa hirsuta was discovered in March 2006 in the South Pacific Ocean and was nicknamed “yeti crab” for the hair-like bristles that cover its arms. While this crustacean looks pretty fearsome in its own right, just imagine how terrifying a yeti with giant crab arms would be.

The Barreleye

This sad looking fellow was first discovered back in 1939ish but had until recently only been found dead in the nets of fishermen. In 2004 scientists release the first image and video recordings of a live and well Barreleye. No wonder he’s got the blues; everybody can see what he’s thinking.

The Goblin Shark

If there were unicorns of the bad kind they would look like this. The Goblin Shark is a deep water predator that can be found worldwide, though more frequently in the waters near Japan.

Hagfish

Many animals have strange defense mechanisms; skunks spray musk, possums play dead and turtles retreat into their shells. And as for hagfish? They squirt slime. Hagfish excrete a mucus-like substance that becomes thick and sticky when combined with water. This slime is used to distract predators and to help them escape from the jaws of fish. They feed on marine worms off of the sea floor as well as the bodies of dead or dying sea creatures. Hagfish enter the body through an opening, such as the mouth or the anus, and eat the creature from the inside. Due to their behavior, these creatures have been dubbed the most “the most disgusting of all sea creatures”, and I would have to agree.

The last known survivor of the RMS Titanic, Millvina Dean, passed away yesterday, Monday June 1st 2009, at the age of 97. Dean was only an infant when the steamship on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York hit an iceberg and sunk April 14th, 1912. 4. Titanic Cow by artist Lithium

Located at Plaza de Felipe II, Madrid, Spain the artwork of artist Lithium; Titanic Cow is a part of the exhibition The Cowparade. Though the pupose of the expo seems to be to chock and provoke, maybe Lithium took the task a little bit too serious.  The cow, painted as the Titanic is stuck with her head in an inceberg. Funny, but still not totally ok.

5. Miniature Model of The Titanic Sinking

There seems to be some sort of amusement park in Obereschach, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany consisting of miniature models of historically famous objects, including Alcatraz, Niagara Falls, Khafre’s pyramid and of course the Titanic, in its popular standup sinking position. Sure, the Titanic was a famous catastrophy, but surely too tragic to expose like this. Or?

6. Titanic Aquarium Decoration

Product description: “Precisely detailed to look just like the Titanic”. A bit tasteless to have a miniature model of the Titanic floating around in your aquarium? 7.Titanic Ice Cubes

Fred and Friends (sold through Amazon.com) has developed the non-tacky product Gin and Titonic ice cubes. Perfect for any happy occassion to spice up the drink presentation. The Titanic shaped ice cubes will effectfully recreate the night when Titanic sank, all in your glass of Gin and Tonic. Though proven not so successful for the ship itself, the Gin and Titanic ice cubes are also great icebreakers.

8. Titanic Song – Movie Theme by Kenny G

The elevator music guy got to make the theme instrumental for the movie Titanic. And though the music isn’t in itself that bad, Celine Dion can sing after all, there is something about the that Kenny G that almost feels mocking. Maybe it’s the curly hair, the sleezy romantic look he puts on, or the fact that he chose to dedicate his life to clarinet. Kenny G bugs me and that is why it is not totally ok to put him to create tunes that we until the end of times will associate with The Titanic. Not cool!

9. Windows XP Titanic

This desktop wallpaper, isn’t as much indecent as it is funny and and entirely accurate. I simply could not help but include this illustration of Windows XP as sure of sinking as the Titanic. Though this example referred to the Titanic disaster, it is infact the only good example that can illustrate the lost cause that XP actually is.

10. Kärschers Immerson Pumps Ad

Finshing off this top 10 list of how modern times remember and honors the Titanic disaster, I have included water pump company Kärschers’, neadless to say, interesting advertisement. It’s clever and smart, and the only provocative aspect is that the ad bases on the fact that everybody knows about The Titanic. Despite that, this ad effectfully concludes this list, as an perfect example of how Titanic is still very much with us almost 100 years later.

Willie Tanner – ALF

The NBC classic sitcom ALF aired between 1986 and 1990, and as you probably know plots around a furry little alien called Alf who crash lands his spaceship in the Tanner’s resident. Though Alf naturally got all the attention, I must give my salute to father Willie Tanner, played by actor Max Wright. Mr. Tanner belongs to the exception of sitcom dads, who’s characters are actually respectable. He may not be the funniest but every time he had a mano a mano talk with Alf, wearing those huge glasses and sharing his words of wisdom, I couldn’t help but get all warm inside. I can however agree that he sometimes could come off kind of harsh towards Alf. But then again, Alf could be a real bachelor pain in the ass.

Frank Barone – Everybody Loves Raymond

As the sitcom is based on Ray’s real life let’s not hope Frank Barrone is a replica of Raymonds real dad, because let’s face it; Frank is a horrible man. And though Mr. Barone had a few fine moments during the series long life-line, his character showed little hope for improvement. Mean, condescending and simply hilarious.

Frank Costanza – Seinfeld

With a fierce temper George’s father is a favorite character on the Seinfeld show. Frank Costanza is the father, uncle, heck even a relative nobody wants to have. He is however one of the most hilarious parental characters the American sitcom industry has ever produced.

Red Forman – That 70’s Show

Always threatening to put his foot up someone ass, Red Forman won a special place in the hearts of every fan of That 70s Show. Uncommunicative, grumpy and more conservative than family Sunday dinners, Red is a genius creation who became as much a part of the show as any of the other cast members.

Arthur Spooner – King of Queens

Again Sr. Stiller on a brilliant perfomance as the yelling, border-line psychotic father who lives in the basement.

Dr. Dick Solomon – 3rd Rock from The Sun

Although only assigned father figure of the Salomon household, Dr. Dick Solomon is a great addition to the sitcom dad hall of fame with his narcissistic way.

Bill Cosby – The Cosby Show

Nobody can hate Bill Cosby. Sure, Eddie Murphy can make fun of him, but in truth Cosby hasn’t a bad bone in his body.

Al Bundy – Married with Children

Now, Al Bundy can be hated and should be hated, but is all the same loved by a whole generation of TV-viewers. He sort of grow on you, with his initial bitterness in the end transforming into brilliant wit.

Martin Crane – Frasier

In the sitcom Frasier, the two brothers Crane adds enough intellectual and male sensitivity, with father Martin Crane balancing it out with some good ‘Ol American father role modeling.

10. The Year  2012 – The End of The Mayan Calender

The year 2012 is the last year in the 5,125 year cycle of the Mayan Calender. December 21st is thus believed by many odd people to be the last day of human civilization. All glory to the Indian history and heritage, but can  it possible be that they Mayan dude who made the calender got bored or had better things to do? Not proven faulty yet, we will just have to wait and see if this prophecy will come true.

9. The Year 2000 – The New Millenium

Besides the Millennium bug, the end of the world was highly anticipated. None of the two came true, and all that the world was left with was yet another lame new years eve.

In brand new Nike shoes, 39 cultists committed mass suicide under the belief that the Apocalypse was here. At least they went out in style.

7. The Year 1982 – The Jupiter Effect

The bestselling book of 1974, The Jupiter Effect, by John Gribbin and Stephen Plagemann predicted that a rare planetary alignment were to cause massive quakes. The tide elevated by 0,04mm.

Baptist preacher William Miller formed the American Christian sect, the Millerite movement, not long before prophesying the return of Jesus.  The some 50,000 Millerites across the U.S preparing for Second Coming on October 22 were left disappointed. This date is today known as The Great Disapointment.
